The first idea I thought of was ‘Don’t shoot the circles’ - the concept being that you have a gun which always fires projectiles, and you are surrounded by circles. If you shoot a circle, you get another gun, and the more guns you have, the worse it gets!
This concept kinda stuck...I replaced projectiles with beams, added a whole lot of different shapes (with different attributes) added upgrades and viola! ‘Shapes Are Mean’ was born.
The whole game - from start to finish - took me all three days. What that meant was three super late nights (or rather early mornings) in a row. It was worth it though - I had a lot of fun, and I think I chose the right project scope: my project size wasn’t too easy or too difficult based on the time I had. I also got to learn a whole new bunch of things. This included:
If I had more time, I would have added better screen transitions, perhaps some more effects, but overall, I am happy with the end result! I’m enjoying the gameplay, and hope that others feel the same way. Speaking of which, I should be able to start checking out some of the other games from Wednesday onwards.
PS - below is a video with a 6 minute timelapse of the making of 'Shapes Are Mean', start to finish!
